Sundt Builds New Corporate HQ in Tempe
By Tom McClure
Sundt's newest project is its own office building. The $11.5 million project will be submitted for LEED silver certification.
Sundt Construction, Inc. is building a new three-story office building to house the company’s growing operations. The 67,400-sq-ft, $11.5 million building will sit on four acres in Tempe’s Fountainhead Corporate Park and will be home to 220 employees from the company’s heavy-civil division, Arizona building division, management, corporate support personnel and others.
Sundt is utilizing building information modeling for the project.
“It was a way for us to use our own building as a good learning curve on BIM and also a teaching aid.” Pruitt says. “It has reduced a lot of the conflicts that you would normally have during construction.”
Designed by the Phoenix office of SmithGroup Inc., the building’s main lobby will contain a “legacy room” that will showcase Sundt’s 117-year history. The room will be dynamic to reflect various projects Sundt has done in the past and will be updated with future projects, Pruitt says. A reflection room, a quiet area with a fountain for employees to spend a few minutes in private thought, is being incorporated into the design. An in-house fitness center is included, too.
Consuming most of the space will be offices and high-tech training and meeting facilities including four video conferencing rooms.
“It will become our primary IS facility for Sundt, and we’ll have an emergency generator backup system for our computer system,” Pruitt adds.
The facility is designed to be LEED silver certified. “We are out selling this to our clients and it would be ridiculous for us to not step up and do the same thing,” Pruitt says. Some of the green building features include raised-access floors, under-floor air distribution, high-efficiency HVAC equipment and extensive use of recycled materials.
This project also includes a single -level parking deck and a total of 360 parking spaces onsite. It is scheduled to open in November.
