Top Design Firms of the Southwest
Architects and Engineers Feel Slight Decline in 2007
Our ranking of the top design firms is based on information gathered through surveys sent to hundreds of architects and engineers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. Thank you to all of the firms who provided us with their 2007 revenue, allowing us to produce the most detailed ranking of its kind in the Southwest.
This year’s ranking examines the 2007 revenue of the top 142 design firms in the Southwest. Rankings are also provided for each state, discipline and category, including environmental, healthcare and water supply.
After five years of double digit growth, design activity slackened just slightly last year. The top 140 design firms reported $1.73 billion in design work for 2007, a less than 1% drop from the $1.74 billion reported in 2006.
Arizona firms held at $975 million, nearly identical to last year. Nevada dropped to $481 million while New Mexico designers saw a 1.2% increase to $276 million.
The top-ranked firm again this year is HDR. The Phoenix office reported $95 million in revenue for the Southwest region, mostly in civil engineering.
HKS Inc. rose all the way from 83rd to the third spot overall, but the large jump occurred because the firm’s survey last year didn’t include their Nevada revenue.
Carollo Engineers also joined the top 10 this year, moving from 17 to ninth place. CMX climbed from 25th to 12th.
Information was gathered through mailed, emailed and online surveys. If your firm does not appear on the ranking and would like to in the future, please contact Tom McClure at 480-656-7764.
