The Tempe Transportation Center is a true multi-model facility that integrates light rail, city buses, bicyclists and pedestrians with a mixed-use building that includes retail, a bike station, transit store, offices and transit operations center. The project is registered for LEED Platinum certification with a number of innovative design elements.

The green roof includes native Sonoran desert plants and required a special soil design. The building has a gray water recovery and reuse system on site and a storm water collection system.

An innovative HVAC system was installed that includes an under-floor air system with a green screen system to model the building energy performance. A computer-controlled interior lighting system saves on energy consumption.

The facility is designed and constructed to serve as a demonstration and educational piece for the people who pass through it, and includes the first re-use, recycle signage program in the nation. The climate responsive design and recycled content materials are also unveiled to the visitors and occupants through educational interactive touch-screen panels.
